Ivory Poaching

My name is Darien. I am a third grader. My favorite book is Ricky Ricotta. I am in Excellence Charter School. My teachers name is Mr.deLeon. Another book that I like is The Slime Wars. I have fourteen friends. I can’t name all of my friends but I can tell you about why ivory poaching is BAD. My social issue is ivory poaching. A social issue is an issue that affects me and my society. Ivory poaching affects me because it makes me feel sad that so many elephants are dying. I didn’t know that elephants were endangered until today. In this essay, you will learn about why you should not poach ivory and make elephants endangered. I am also going to tell you some details about elephants.

I am going to tell you about what elephants do and eat. Elephants eat bark from trees. They strip bark from trees using their tusks. When water is hard to find, elephants use their tusks to dig up the water. Elephants use their trunks to drink the water. Their trunk is really their upper lip and their nose. Grasses, fruits, leaves, water, plants and seeds are the main foods that elephants eat. I just told you what elephants do and eat.

I am going to tell you about why it is bad to kill elephants just for their tusks. What I think ivory poaching is is when people cut their faces just for their tusks. Why don’t you eat the skin? The big problem issue about poaching is that people cut elephants heads off just to get their tusks. People should eat the skin and meat to. People are killing thousands of elephants with big machine guns. Elephants are being endangered by people by people taking their ivory. Now you know not to kill elephants just for their tusks.

I think that the person who reads my essay should get some of his friends and some police bring a lot of guns, food and weapons and go to where elephants live and help them. You should stay with them so they won’t get hurt. If poachers bring machine guns, I would try to fight them. You could also donate money to the poachers so they could stop killing elephants. They want money so I should give them some money and then I can make a deal with them so they could stop killing elephants.

In conclusion, people should not kill elephants just for their tusks. Now you know not to kill elephants just for their tusks. I hope you love my essay and that you learned a lot.

Darien,
I can tell that you really understand the complex issues that create the poaching problem. Elephants are being killed because people need money. You make it clear in your essay that the problem will persist until the people have another means to make money. Your essay also sugggests that the elephants need human protectors. Elephants are gentle creatures who are not being treated gently. I hope that some people will take up the cause and protect the endangered elephant. Your solutions are wise! I'm very impressed.
Sincerely,
Ms. Genzlinger

Darien,

Your essay was very powerful. You have a great set of ideas in the fourth paragraph. However, I prefer not to fight violence with violence. Remember what Gandhi said: "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." I bet poachers have a reason to take the tusks. They need money, too. I hope one day you own a huge business and can hire them so that they don't have to poach ivory.

Great work, Darien,
Mr. de Leon

darien,
great info on what elephants eat and how they live. poachers need to stop. so many times after an elephant has been killed by a poacher the body is left to rot. i agree with you in that at least the skin and meat should be eaten. some people do eat the meat if they can get it, but often a villager is not around when an elephant is poached. at leat the poachers could be a little considerate and take the meat to a village for the villagers to eat. that would be a lot of meat !! so many africans are starving and the meat would help. poachers need to stop killing for ivory and start thinking of ways to help their fellow humans live. !!

Darien,
You wrote such a thoughtful essay about ivory poaching. I really connected to your comments about how if people kill elephants, they should not do so for the ivory alone, but rather they should use the whole elephant for other reasons, for example, food. You clearly spent a lot of time and hard work on this and you should be proud of your finished product! Well done!

Darien,

You should be a writer for National Geographic. You have done a magnificent job capturing all of the challenges facing elephants today. There is obviously a lot more we humans can be doing to ensure their survival. First we must eradicate our ignorance. Now that I know more about elephants I want to help them. Thanks for waking me up.
