Circus Work!?

Hey, my name is Stephan. I am 9 years old and in my elephant essay. You are going to learn about things you never knew happened to elephants. In my essay you will be heart broken. This essay will have drama parts in it. Reading my essay will make you learn about circus work and how it affects people in society. Trust me.

I care about elephants because they are just like us and we will give them love, treats, care, and respect. But the thing that ticks me off is that people are still poaching elephants in Africa. I just don’t get it, why would you run up to an elephant and poach it? Poaching is when people stick a long stick in elephant’s jaws or along their face. They also use guns to poach the elephants. The poachers are trying to get their tusks so they can make jewelry out of their tusks. You can think about that for the remainder time we have left for the elephants. Okay, enough about that, another reason why I love elephants is because they are elephants and they need respect. They respect each other by wrapping their trunks together. Maybe elephants are misunderstood. I mean like if people are still poaching them, burning down habitats, and leaving elephants for dead, they must be misunderstood. There are so many things to learn about elephants! So much! Coming up next is something horrible that will happen to elephants.

This is part of my essay that makes you sad. I am going to talk to you about circus work. My issue with circus work is that the people that are playing the circus really beat animals. There have been records about elephants beat in the circus. I don’t think that is right because elephants have a right to be free like us. The number one problem is why elephants are working too hard. One of my connections to this subject is I went to a circus when I was six years old. At the end of the show the whole crowd walked out the circus and saw a dead elephant. I don’t think elephants should work at all. I think elephants should be free living in the wild.

My solution for elephants not getting hurt is not working the circus. Two is to not kill elephants, especially not just for taking their tusks away. Taking the life of an elephant just to get their tusks so a person can carve a necklace out of it is wrong. Now, stop right there. That does not make any sense. Which is more important? A necklace or an elephant? You decide.

My point that I am trying to tell you is that in my opinion, everyone should not hate elephants. I am an elephant lover. You make the choice whether or not you take an elephant’s life or buy ivory jewelry. If you’re not buying it, the people who are selling it may not keep on killing the elephants and maybe one day they will realize that what they are doing is wrong. How can you do that kind of thing to an elephant? You make the decision. Which is more important? A necklace or an elephant? You decide.

Stephan,
I am also heart broken by the plight of the elephant. To me, the elephant is much more important than a necklace, no question about it! I am disgusted by the way that elephants are treated in the circus. It is so unneccary. I hope that people will read your essay and be inspired to boycott the circus. I certainly am.
Sincerely,
Ms. Genzlinger

Stephan,

After reading your essay, I can promise you that I will never go to the circus again. I will, however, go to events that treat animals fairly. Your essay is extremely well-written. I can tell that you LOVE elephants. Your paragraph two is very strong. Keep up this work ethic. Work you do by yourself is SO IMPRESSIVE!

Stephan-
I thought it was really interesting to hear about your experience going to the circus - it really helped to prove your point and convinced me even more to not go to the circus. Thanks for writing about this important topic!

Dear Stephan,
First I must tell you that I like your name. Why? Because my name is Stephanie! Our name comes from the Greek language and means "Crown." I hope your friends and family treat you like a king!
Now I should get serious and give you my reactions to your essay. I noticed two strengths: you provide many excellent details which bring the information to life, and you give a connection from your own experience. I'm so sorry you had to see a dead elephant, but maybe some good can come from that terrible time. By describing the event and your feelings, you make your readers understand that elephants must not be abused in circuses.
I am the librarian of an elementary school, and my students love for me to read books about Babar the elephant. In one of them, Babar experiences something very sad, but some funny things happen after that. In fact, there is something in the book that relates to the meaning of our name.
I hope your school library has this book and that your librarian will read it to you. Or if you like the Internet, you can learn about Babar at this web site:

Thanks for posting an essay that only you could write.

Your fellow crownhead,
Mrs. Rodda

stephan,
even though I love the circus i have always felt sorry for the elephants ( and the tigers/lions/bears). they are mistreated and do not belong in a circus but rather in africa and asia where they were born. elephants cannot defend themselves against guns! they are gentle (most of the time) and want love and just to live with their families. i have never seen a dead elephant in real life and i hope i never do. i appreciate animals and the beauty they provide to us. i do not wear animal products at all. i try not to have that kind of stuff around. i am all for leaving elephants and all animls in their natural environment.

Stephan,

You've given me a lot to think about. I didn't realize elephants are mistreated in the circus. I thought they enjoyed their jobs. You did a good job bringing your emotions into this piece. Often the most convicing essays provide a glimpse into the authors true feelings. This essay should wake up a lot of people who read it. This will give the elephants a better chance to survive. Great job.
