Ivory Poaching
A social issue is an issue that in involves the whole community. My issue is about elephants and why people are killing elephants for their tusks. Hello my name is Khalil. I go to a school called ECS which stands for Excellence Charter School. I’m going to tell all about how I love elephants. But, there is a problem. People are killing elephants! In my essay, you are going to read about how elephants are becoming endangered because of ivory poaching. I hope you enjoy this great essay and that you learn a lot.
I’m going to tell you why we should care about elephants. The reason we should care about elephants is because elephants are on their own to protect them. But the thing that is amazing is elephants eat up to 300 pounds of food in one day! Another cool fact is they can drink up 50 gallons of water! Just think about that elephants drink less than they eat! The last cool fact is about a herd. Did you know a herd is a group of elephants? And the leader is a matriarch, which means a female elephant. I just told you some very cool facts about elephants.
The issue I’m going to tell about ivory poaching. Did you know ivory is made out of elephant’s tusks? And they use ivory to make money. Poachers kill elephants just for their ivory tusks and then they sell it to other people to make jewels. One time, Mr. de Leon showed us a picture of two poachers of an elephant’s face cut off. At first I thought the two poachers cut its face off but now I know that the men were helping the elephants. But the poachers cut off the face. When I saw a picture of an elephant’s face cut off because of the poachers I was disgusted by that. And did you know that elephant’s tusks are deep inside them. Elephants are almost extinct because of the war that’s going on. People are shooting the elephants with machine guns just to take elephant’s tusks.
I think people who live in Asia and Africa look out for elephants and if they do they can move all the elephants to a safe place. For example, they can move them to there homes backyard. To keep the elephants alive, we need to feed them ,bathe them and give them water. Here are things people in the United States can do. For example, if somebody passes a store that’s says. “Get your ivory and jewels.” I would think for a moment and keep on walking. Instead I would buy like those Jesus piece that is wooden that’s what I’m buying.
In conclusion, people should have to learn from this essay because people are killing elephants. They are dying just because people you know want to get ivory jewelry. I hope you love my five paragraph essay and that you learned a lot.

Khalil,
Your essay is very powerful. It is clear to me that you are passionate about the crisis that faces the elephant. I am also disgusted by what the poachers are doing to these incredible creatures. Your solution is so good because it's simple: don't buy ivory. Thank you for teaching me so many interesting facts about the elephant. I hope many people read your essay and do something to help this endangered species.
Sincerely,
Ms. Genzlinger
Khalil,
My attention was caught and kept from the first line. I am extremely impressed by your writing skills. You got help to correct your sentence fragments and this turned into a stellar essay. You summarized the facts quite well and provided convincing arguments. Great work, Khalil.

Hey Bro,
Great essay!!! It was very well-written and your thoughts were executed like a true “Scholar”. Throughout life, you’re going to continue to come across situations that you don’t agree with. And instead of contributing to the problem, it’s in you to make the difference- you’re a leader! Continue to be passionate and stern when it comes to your beliefs because simple things, like this essay, make a huge difference! I’m proud of you & I love you!!!

Khalil,
Your essay is amazing, I am so proud of your thinking and concerns about animals. I once asked you, what you wanted to be when you grow-up and your response was an animal doctor. I then told you the proper terminology and asked you why you wanted to be a Veterinarian. You never forgot the word Veterinarian and responded by saying that animals could not talk and you want to help and protect them in every way. And your essay displays a passion you have always had; you can make a difference, Doctor……..
HEY KHAILIL, THANKS FOR THE COMMENT I just wanted to say that your essay's the bbbbbbbbbbbboooooooooooommmmmmmmbbbbbbbb!
khalil,
great job! you are right too in that poachers cut not just the teeth ( tusks ) but to get to the whole thing they have to chop up the elephants face !! YUK! Poachers are fed by greed and desire for money. they don't care about the beautiful elephants. elephants are huge and need lots of space to live. as your article points out, they also need lots of food and water but humans are intruding on the elephants homeland. humans are destroying the forests and fields where elephants live so they can build homes and farm. no wonder elephants are mad. they need to live and they need space..lots of it. humand do not need ivory or any other animal product ( like leather ).
