The Evils of Ivory Poaching

Thousands of pairs of tusks lay ready to be cut into fancy jewels available for purchase worldwide.

Ivory Poaching
My name is Andre. I am 9 years. My school is Excellence Charter School of Bedford-Stuyvesant. I live on Park Ave in brooklyn, NY. I am writing a five paragraph essay on a specific social issue, that is ivory poaching. A social issue is an issue that affects our community. This social issue affects me because it makes me feel sad that poachers are killing elephants. In this essay, I am going to talk about ivory poaching, facts and also talk about land clearing. In paragraph four, I am going to talk about a solution to this problem.
Elephants are cool. I like elephants because the trunk is the nose and upper lip. Elephants carry their babies for 22 months. Elephants use mud to keep insects off their bodies. I care about elephants because they are the biggest land animals. The elephants don’t harm you so why do you harm elephants? Elephants only eat grass, not people. They sleep right next to each other. That is not fair that elephants are getting killed for nothing they did. That is if I shot you with a gun a you do not do anything bad at all. That is like me choking you. A stab in the back. That’s why I care about elephants.
Ivory poaching is when people kill elephants for their tusks to make jewels. Ivory is the stuff that makes their teeth. Poaching is killing animals. The big issue about poaching is killing elephants. What did elephants do to deserve this? Poachers are killing elephants with their rapid-fire machine guns. That does not make any sense whatsoever. That’s the reason poaching is despicable. Before, there were millions of elephants. Now there are only five hundred thousand in the entire world! That means that they are an endangered species. So, the bottom line is elephants are endangered because of the destruction that is happening to them.
So, what can you do about it? Well, a solution to this problem is to stop buying ivory jewels. We should stop buying ivory jewels because poachers are killing the elephants. So, if we stop buying ivory, the poachers will stop killing elephants because they will stop making money. I can go on strike so the poachers would stop selling ivory jewels. I would get my family to go on strike with me. We can make signs for the elephants that say “STOP KILLING ELEPHANTS FOR THEIR TUSKS!” So, poachers stop killing elephants for their tusks because no one wants your jewels anymore!
In conclusion, please remember that killing elephants for their tusks is wrong. Now elephants are endangered. I hope you take this seriously. Please enjoy my essay.

Andre,
I am in complete agreement with you-poaching is despicable! I hope that many people will read your powerful essay and become convinced to never buy ivory jewelry. I know that I will never spend my money on this attrocity.
Sincerely,
Ms. Genzlinger
Andre,
This is a really well-written essay. You used extremely mature vocabulary words without my prompting. You have grown this year, Andre. You've grown into quite an impressive writer. Remember the old days when you used to get so frustrated?! Look how far you've come!

Andre,
You are such an activist with such passion. I am so blessed to have a son who is so caring. I was so moved to know that you have such concern about these enormous creatures.
Love,
Mom :)
Andre,
This is a very powerful essay. You have written with a very convincig spirit. When I was in Tanzania a few years ago I got the chance to observe elephants up close in the wild. They are some of the most peaceful creatures I have ever seen. It is so sad to know that we may one day live in a world without these amazing creatures. Hopefully other people will listen to your pleas. Keep up the great and important work.
Mr. Sawicki
